Blue Ridge Farm

Blue Ridge Farm

— Virginia —

THIS SECOND HOME is located on a spectacular property overlooking the Blue Ridge mountains. An existing farmhouse could not be saved, but its specific vernacular and the family’s requirements — including a light-filled art studio — inspired a completely new house. A range of indicative materials — fieldstone, board siding, and a copper roof — accentuate the exterior composition of porches, gables, and roofs of various heights to recall the texture and forms of homes that are added onto over time. From within the house, the breathtaking landscape is captured companionably through a rhythm of openings. Each compelling view leads to another, subtly guiding the visual flow from one room to the next.

Period authenticity is reinforced throughout with detailing and woodwork; notably via a variety of paneling configurations and reclaimed wood flooring that impart the venerable farmhouse esthetic. The property also includes an old barn, painstakingly restored, and charmingly repurposed as an artist’s workspace and gallery.
